Hey Funky !!
I agree with you about the overkill but on the other hand it is okay for me because ppl worked so hard to make this day happen. It mwill be a once in a lifetime thing for many ppl especially our seniors so let them party.
For MLK I did nothing but stay home and reflect and enjoy so queit time with my child. I resent that MLKs Day has been co-opted (yes, I said it) by corporate USA & others. MLK was about struggling for civil & human rights. No one talks about that anymore & there is still plenty of struggling to do. But no, kids are learning that the day is about volunteering/painting/cleaning/helping out for a day & then business as usual. That is sad to me. No one else seems bothered by this.

Right! And furthermore, if your not giving back, what are you here for?

I believe Obama has made MLKs B-Day a National Day of Service for many. I was proud of my husband. He babysat his nephews and little sister. I thought that was very cute. He was very awesome ... such a good role model running around cooking being the best daddy he could be.

I didn't participate in the "day of service" because I dedicate my life to service. I am very thankful that so many have jumped on board. Hallelujah!

Although I didnt do anything special that day, I did take the day off & spent quality time with my 2year old son. We watch the inauguration together. I knew this day would one day occur, but I have to be honest & saying that I never thought it would happen in my life time.

For my son's 1st B-day I had made a T shirt stating Omar for President just for fun. Now I truly believe that if he choices it could be a possibility.

OK, I'm confused...why haven't you been showing up on my blog updates? I've missed a lot...gotta go back and read what I missed.

Back to the post...I love my new president...I smile everytime I think of what I've witnessed.

I hate how promoters ALWAYS try to screw people out of their money when there's a special event going on.

yeah I do think the circumstances were a little pompous... the ticket prices for parties was ridiculous and every promoter everywhere took full advanatage of all the black people that would be in town... It was truly an amazing experience though and I am so proud that everyone was on their best behavior, that ther were no arrests and that everyone respected this great sharing the documentary clip

I think his main reason in organizing the day of service is to down play all of the pomp & circumstance and make people aware that it's not all about the parties & balls...

THANK YOU for sharing you already know I have to share.

I know more than ever being back in Texas that the whole world does not feel the love and togetherness of this country like the majority of us do.

In the same way the held strong to Jim Crow the south is slow to truly understand they are being left behind. The nice thing is that I think the minority is still small. I also think that they will be forced to at least get with the picture. But you are so right hate will never die. I mean our children will have our slightly less bigoted version of Strom Thurman.

I am so grateful that I got to spend 11/4 in Boston. I experienced the audacity of hope the excitement the jubilation. I spent yesterday here and Houston and it was cold and unkind and uncaring almost a deliberate thumb to nose of the event. Ooooooooooo my co-worker, man when I finally do blog I got a special section for him.

I told my friend today at lunch in Boston I could feel the excitement and the hope and the eagerness to roll up our sleeves and get to work for MY country. In Texas all I feel is fear. And they are right they should be fearful because the politics of hatred and exclusion on a major level are in their last days. Everything wants to fight to live even hate and I think that is the fear I see in the people who refuse to be a part of this history. These people who refuse to live in a equal world are fearful because this is the beginning of the end of that kind of thinking. You know kinda like when it was no longer okay for blacks to sit in the back. It made other whites look down on you for thinking that way.

Ok sorry for the book, but well you know THIS IS HISTORY. And thanks again for sharing!

*hides in corner

I didn't participate in the National Day of Service.....working on making service a more regular event. I don't think that someone should have to make a Day for all of us to give back.

That being said...I watched the parties last night. Looked like all had fun. I think that a little pomp and circumstance is necessary; every time we do it, we show other countries that there are civilized ways to transfer power. No one died, no one was overthrown, no one had to run away. Using the Inauguration as an excuse to throw a $10,000 party? No. Celebrating a transition, sure.

I spent inauguration day with my niece and her best friend on the mall watching the inauguration take place. I got goose bumps watching the event unfold and being among other President Obama supporters. I may not have taken part in the Day of Service, however, I volunteer year round for various charities and organizations. As a matter of fact, in a couple of weeks I will officially become a BIG SISTER courtesy of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America!

Girl, you know what I thought about these things. I must admit though...I didn't do a doggone thing on Monday.

Tisha Campbell said the same thing I thought about leaving the country if Prez Obama didn't win. On another note, am I the only one a little ticked every time the knucklehead commentators refer to President O by his last name only...?
