Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Let me preface this and say that I’m not a beauty blogger or natural hair blogger. I have a routine that works for me, and if people ask what that is, then fine, I’m all for sharing. Last year I wrote about my “Hair Arsenal” and from that post, I received a few emails about some of the products I mentioned. I will be the first to say, that just because I have natural hair, doesn’t mean that I stick to a strictly ‘natural’ product routine. There have been natural products, which I shall not name, that have caused me tremendous issues when it came to shedding and irritation. I remember one time several years ago, I started using on in particular, and within a week, my hair was literally falling out in clumps. Needless to say, after I stopped the product the horrible shedding stopped.
So obviously from reading the above, this post is about MY hair. Every couple of years I go through the motions when it comes to my hair, and this is one of those moments. Today I blew it out and the scissors were staring right at me. As tempting as it was, I couldn’t bring myself to start the big cut off. All I could muster up was simple trim. After I was done, I still wasn’t satisfied.
A few weeks ago I contemplated starting my quest to cultivate my hair into locs (dreadlocks but I hate using that word). When I told a few friends, they all gave me an immediate side-eye, because they knew about my commitment issues, when it comes to my hair, among other things. I figured I would test it out by having my sister put my hair into two strand twists. After she finished, I felt so naked. I was so used to having my hair loose & free flowing, that it felt weird to have it tied down. I literally felt naked. That night I had plans to go out with a few friends to see ?uestlove perform at Liv , I was so self-conscious about not having my hair out, that I had thought about not even going. But then there were people like Vicki aka Gravity508, who although joked about my head, but reassured me that it looked fine, when I saw her that night. The compliment that was even more interesting was one from a random guy who approached me, to let me know he thought it was nice as well. I blame it on the alcohol & the mere fact that I was tired & heading out of the lounge for me not engaging in conversation with him, because he was quite handsome. Anyways, the twists only lasted a few days, simply because of the product I used, that will not be named, made my hair feel like an oil slick!
So here I am, a few weeks later and I still have no idea what I want to do with my hair.
Locs?
Black?
Brown?
Honey Blond?
Straight? (with a flat iron, I don’t do lye)
Curly? (which is the norm for me 24/7)
Complete chop off?
Decisions, decisions! I have no idea what I’ll end up with, but I do know, this week I’ll start off with a new hair color. Light brown with golden blond highlights is my Spring & Summer favorite, so I’ll stick to my regular at home self-coloring routine. Whatever I decide to choose, I’m sure I’ll end up writing about that journey as well!
Has anyone else gone through hair trials & tribulations or ever get the need for a change? Men, I swear some of yall have it easy. Just walk into a barber & ask for a #1 and a shape-up!
