R.I.P To My Grandfather

Yesterday as I was on my way home from the airport, I was notified that my grandfather’s battle with Prostate cancer had ended. Although my family has been preparing for this moment for the past couple of months, it’s still doesn’t lessen the effect of having a loved one leave.

Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The latest American Cancer Society estimates for prostate cancer in the United States are for 2009:

  • about 192, 280 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed
  • 27,360 men will die of prostate cancer

Just this past September, President Obama declared the month as “National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month”, that was met with little or no fan fare.  Personally, I didn’t even realize that there was such a month, until after having a conversation with a friend of mine, and his issue with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the fanfare that’s behind it.

According to Cancer.org:

About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. More than 2 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. About 1 man in 35 will die of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer accounts for about 10% of cancer-related deaths in men.

Just like cancer in general, there are no cures for Prostate cancer, but you can help further the research by donating to the Prostate Cancer Research Institute in honor of my grandfather, and the countless other men who have suffered from it.

    I didn't know of a month for Prostate Cancer, either. Cancer regardless of which organ or sex is a monster of a disease. When my great-grandmother was diagnosed with cancer in her leg..it was already too late...and no, no preparation is possible. Her leaving, in spite of being 91 was still painful. I love you...I AM here.

    My condolences to you and your family and my heartfelt thanks for you helping bringing this disease to light. There have been number of men in my family and just men friends who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. You're right, there was little to no fanfare of Prostate Cancer month and their should be.
