I’se Negro

Black.

Afro-American.

African-American.

Negro?

I repeat.

Negro?

According to the 2010 census, you too can be transported back to the days of slavery and now feel free to refer to yourself as “negro”.  I’d like to know how many black people refer to themselves as negro nowadays.  Sure, I’ve used the word negro before.

For example:

“Hey can I borrow $500?”, he asked.

“Negro, please, get the fuck out of here with that bullshit”, I replied.

So yeah, I’m sure negro is being used in some sort of context nowadays, but do  people classify themselves as that.  It’s almost like referring to Asian people as “oriental”.

The last time I heard the word negro or a similar variation was used in Alex Haley’s movie, “Queen”. If I’m not mistaken, it was a scene when Queen decided to stop passing as white, and she told the man, ““I’se nig’ra! I’se nig’ra!”

So it’s now 2010, we have a black President, now feel free to refer to yourself as negro. Next thing you know, CNN will have a show called, “Negro In America” and Tyler Perry will give his closing remarks again.

...but people still support the united NEGRO college fund...
  • i don't think the word "negro" has the same weight as the term like "coon" or "darky", but i do think this is telling of who designs the census and who sets up the questions. the questions are clearly not designed by a staff that includes a number of blacks, otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion. and the people who design these types pf questionnaires need to acknowledge us as a people and acknowledge what we wish to define ourselves as. that being said though, if 5 blacks said they refer to themselves as "negro", then it would have been included.

I'm holding out for the term "coon", I'm sure that one will be added soon too.
  • This is some odd ish. People lost their lives fighting for us to treated and seen as "equal" yet we've been hurdled back to this? I need to read up on this. I'm saying it loud, I's black and (for the most part) proud.

Me, I want them to bring back 'Colored', my all-time fave.
  • Obviously, I've been under a rock lately...so negro and black will be options on the census? The interesting question is how many people will mark that...SMH
  • yes..i'd like to people who'd want to be referred to as 'negro'.

    FEED ME I'S A NEG'RAAAA LOL
  • Ohh that is the scene she said that!
  • Personally I'm not offended by the word Negro, but I question the decision to put it on the Census. It's an anachronistic term, and though I wouldn't mind hearing it from anyone of my black friends, all hell would break loose if I heard it from a white person.
  • Yup, I'm definitely questioning it also, although someone I spoke to asked "what does it matter"...
